The guys and girls at Splat Cooking, in Buckinghamshire, a cooking school seeking to put the fun into baking have launched a new baking workshop this summer dedicated to yet another craze imported from the US – the ‘whoopie’ pie.

Following on from the cupcake craze, ‘whoopie’ pies are those chocolatey cakey treats that end up in US kids and mens’ lunchboxes – they are a cross between the Victoria Sandwich and a filled biscuit – apparently, all the fun is on the inside.

Food-folk legend in America has it that ‘whoopie’ pies derive their origin and quirky name from an Amish tradition where left over batter was formed into lunch-box treats for children and working men – they would open their lunch-boxes and show their delight by shouting “whoopie” – so they say. Traditionally, the cake itself is chocolate with a fluffy white filling, although modern bakers have added a whole variety of flavours and toppings.
